September 25, 2017 By Ryan

NarmourWright recently participated in International Park(ing) Day on September 15, 2017. According to the organization that started this movement, “Park(ing) Day is an annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into ‘Park(ing)’ spaces: temporary public spaces.” This initiative began in 2005 when Rebar, a San Francisco art and design studio, converted a single-metered parking space into a temporary park. Since then Park(ing) Day has evolved into a global movement with organizations and individuals creating new forms of temporary public space around the world.

Under construction Structure

NWA built our Park(ing) space at the intersection of Camden Rd. and Worthington Ave. in front the Design Center of the Carolinas in the Historic South End here in Charlotte. We partnered with The Humane Society of Charlotte and designed our space to be a dog park. Our structure utilized wood pallets as a surrounding fence and benches, carpet tiles as grass/sand, PVC pipe to hold a canopy to maximize shade, and a large dog silhouette that held the other end of the canopy in it’s mouth. We added a pool and dog toys for the enjoyment of our puppy visitors. Even some of our employees enjoyed the park and its “amenities”!

Puppies Tug a War

Park(ing) Day was a success, both dogs and their human counterparts enjoyed the temporary park. We received a lot of curious visitors who were excited to hear about what we were doing and why. We look forward to doing it again next year and maybe we’ll have some more “pop-up parks” in our neighborhood!
